Palazzo Schifanoia, north wall, month of September: above the "Triumph of Vulcan", September is traditionally devoted to the mechanical arts. The protagonist of the first scene is therefore Vulcan, whose triumph is evoked by the chariot pulled by monkeys. On the left, the scene is dominated by the Cyclopes intent on creating the god's weapons and Aeneas' shield adorned with the representation of the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus. On the right, the two figures lying in bed have been interpreted as Venus and Mars or as Ylia and Mars, parents of Romulus. In the center “the sign of Libra”. The decans around Libra do not offer interpretative certainties. The identity of the first, a curious flute player, and of the second, with animalistic characteristics, perhaps a representation of Engonasin, father of Calisto, i.e. the Big Dipper, is very doubtful. The third decan, composed of two characters, is well described by Albumasar and alludes to the constellation of Centaurus.Below “Borso d'Este receives the Venetian ambassador”.Frescoes attributed from time to time to Cosmè Tura or to Ercole de' Roberti or to Gherardo di Andrea Fiorini.
