Palazzo Schifanoia, north wall, month of July: above the “Triumph of Jupiter and Cybele”. He sits on the chariot with Cybele to protect the month of Leo, as Manilius prescribes in the Astronomica. In the background on the right Attis is represented, whose myth is linked to that of Cybele who, driven mad by Agdistis, castrated himself under a pine tree and bled to death. The marriage depicted on the left has instead been interpreted as a reference to the union of Borso's sister, Bianca, with Galeotto della Mirandola in 1468.In the centre "the sign of Leo"; the astrological band opens on the left with a figure wearing a cassock sitting on a tree, a reference to the constellation of Hydra and the related myth. It follows the zodiac sign of Leo with the second decan above it, derived, like the previous one, from the Indian sphere of Albumasar, and identifiable with Regulus, as the presence of the myrtle and the arrow seem to testify. This portion of the fresco ends with a truculent figure feeding on meat identified by scholars as Bootes, guardian of the constellation Ursa.Below “Borso d'Este receives a group of ambassadors”. In the earthly area, Borso's procession is set in a landscape in which he tried to recognize the features of San Giorgio Fuori le Mura (on the right) and the monastery of Sant'Antonio in Polesine (on the left).Frescoes attributed to Ercole de' Roberti or to the so-called wide-eyed Master (1468-1470).
