Palazzo Schifanoia, north wall, month of August: above the “Triumph of Ceres”. The goddess is depicted on the usual chariot, here pulled by winged dragons, while she holds the ear of corn in her right hand, as prescribed in the Astronomica of Manilius. On the right, in the background we can see the abduction of Ceres' daughter, Proserpina, considered protector of the crops. This part of the decoration is dedicated to agricultural activity.In the centre, “the sign of Virgo”. Around the zodiac sign of Virgo we still find characters taken from the Indian and Persian sphere of Albumasar: on the left Proserpina, in the centre a figure difficult to interpret astrologically and on the right a woman in the act of praying who, according to recent studies, seems to refer to Isis.Below “Borso d'Este receives an ambassador”.Frescoes attributed from time to time to Cosmè Tura or to Ercole de' Roberti or to Gherardo di Andrea Fiorini.
