In 1918, after the First World War, Gilera began producing 500 cm³ motorcycles and with these it participated and won in the most prestigious international competitions of the time.Designed by Luigi Salmaggi in the late 1930s and presented at the 1940 Milan Motor Show as the successor to the Otto Bulloni, the Saturno is a 500 cm³ single-cylinder four-stroke. Due to the Second World War, the start of mass production was postponed until 1946 (6 "Tipo Competizione" models were built before the outbreak of the war).
