Buonamico Buffalmacco
Buonamico di Martino, known as Buffalmacco, was born in Florence around 1290. For a long time, he was considered merely a literary figure thanks to four tales by Boccaccio in the Decameron, which portray him as a prankster who loved to mock the foolish and gullible. In reality, in recent times, he has gained his due recognition as one of the leading artists of the fourteenth century, alongside Giotto. His largest work by far is the recently restored fresco cycle in the Camposanto in Pisa, which makes it one of the most important masterpieces in the history of Italian art. Other works of his, unfortunately in a terrible state of preservation, include the frescoes in the Chapel of San Jacopo in the Badia a Settimo. He died in 1340.
