Painting in the art gallery and masterpieces of the Greek-Roman age in the Capitoline Museums, whose creation can be traced back to 1471 when Pope Sixtus IV donated a collection of bronze statues to Rome: marble busts of Roman emperors, marble statues (fragments of a colossal statue of Constantine, colossal statue of a Dioscure, the capitoline Gaul, a wounded Amazon, Leda and the swan, the Capitoline Venus, the Ephesine Artemis, a bust of Sappho), bronze statues (Spinario, the Capitolina wolf).

Rome, Capitolines Museums: bust of the roman emperor Caracalla. (212 - 217 AD), "Lunense" marble and porphyry.Caracalla is remembered as one of the most notorious and unpleasant of emperors because of the massacres and persecutions he authorized and instigated throughout the Empire.Caracalla's reign was also notable for the Constitutio Antoniniana (also called the Edict of Caracalla or the Antonine Constitution), granting Roman citizenship to all freemen throughout the Roman Empire, which according to historian Cassius Dio, was done for the purposes of raising tax revenue. He is also one of the emperors who commissioned a large public bath-house (thermae) in Rome. The remains of the Baths of Caracalla are still one of the major tourist attractions of the Italian capital.

On the left we can see remains of the cell decoration from the Temple of the God Hadrian, with reliefs portraying the Provinces of the Roman empire and military trophies. Along the righthand wall of the courtyard, containing the embedded remains of three archways belonging to the palazzo's original XV century structure, is a row of fragments from a colossal statue of Constantine from the Basilica of Maxentium.

From a Pergamene originalThe sculpture, reproduced several times in engravings and drawings, is perhaps the most famous sculpture of the entire collection. In 1734, the statue was acquired from the Ludovisi Sculpture Collection. Probably the Ludovisi family found the statue on the premises of their villa. The Villa Ludovisi was situated on the ancient horti of Caesar, which through inheritance then passed into the possession of the historian Sallustius. With great pathos the statue depicts a wounded Gaul (Galatian). Perhaps the image pertains to the great donation created during the era of Pergamon that Attalus placed along the terrace of the Temple of Athena Nikephoros in order to celebrate his victories over the Galatians.

Rome, Capitoline Museums: Leda with the Swan, a restored Roman copy, perhaps after an original by Timotheus (360 BC).Marble sculpture.This group is a sculptural representation of the erotic theme of Leda and Zeus in the guise of a swan. Leda, nude, is depicted in the act of lifting up her matnle with her left arm in order to protect the swan from the eagle in the act of snatching it. With her right hand, she holds the swan. The figure is leaning on a tree trunk placed to her right. The statue could be a reworking of a group attributed to the Greek Timotheos, in the fourth century BC, and very common in many replicas beginning in the first century BC.

It is made of precious marble (probably Parian), and represents Venus-Aphrodite coming out of her bath.
